The thread on the alesis power supply got me thinking: if you use a DC to AC convertor you can step up the voltage to power bipolar pedals that require large currents that the MAX1440 can't provide. It can even be used with a 220 primary 9v secondary transformer to power tube pedals from a standard 9vdc supply. Given that most of us use 9vdc as standard to power our effects, a nice little project would be to convert this to 9vAC in order to power diff pedals.

What is the theory for converting DC to AC?

Are there any schematics around I can learn from?

Here is a relatively simple solution.

You can remove the inductor and filter post transformer. No need for a transformer if you only need say +/-15v.

I don't think that circuit is going to regulate very well, if the load varies....

The main problem with generating 9v AC from a 9v battery, is that the 9v AC has a peak to peak range (from the bottom of the - to the top of the +) of 2x1.4x9v, that is over 25V.
