If a switch is a toggle, i don't think you can directly replace it with an on/off switch (without doing a mod).
Because, the toggle probably works by momentarily pulling a digital line to ground, or (less often) up to the + rail.
And if you tried to do this with an on/off switch, you wouldn't know whether you were going on or off - plus you want a momentary contact.

Now you CAN get 'momentary" toggle switches - they havew a spring, so you flip the switch down & it comes back up - but you aren't going to know whether you turned the gear on, or turned it off. You could hack into the effect AFTER the toggle part & operate directly on the electronic switch inside, but that's going to be a hassle...

The alternative, is to use relays & just pull the effect in & out of circuit.

you know there's something cool you can do with boss pedals... i used to see it as my little trick but im sure somebody else has done it, some guys out there that have rack gear don't like pedals on the stage other than the midi footswitch because they don't like to run lines out to the stage, now what i do with them if they wanna add a boss pedal to their set up (mostly modulations or sometimes overdrive pedals) i drill a whole on the boss pedal (depends on where there's room for it) and i install a 1/8" jack for headphones, then i wire the 2 cables that are wire to the footswitch of the boss pedal and wire them to tip and sleeve of the 1/8" jack, then i use a momentary switch (carlin style) and put it in a small metal box with a 1/4" jack (footswitch can be a SDPT, i have even used those from radio shack that work as momentary on/off switches and worked fine) then you wire tip to one lead of the switch and sleeve to the other one so when you step on it they short together, this way you can remotly switch your boss pedal on/off, its a lot of fun to do :-) (another thing you can try is use a stereo cable and split the line thats connected to the LED on the pedal and run that thru the RING of the stereo cable into the new footswitch and wire an LED but i've never tried that.
