what is a good way to soder a transistor so it doesnt get burnt out

You can use sockets.
I take DIP IC machine sockets and cut them up.
You can see what I mean in this pic.
The cut up IC sockets are used to mount the resistors.

Alternatively you can use an alligator clip as a heatsink to absorb some heat.

If you can solder a point in 3 second or less (holding the iron to the point for that time) you will not burn out the transistor.

As an extra precaution, wait several seconds for the first point to cool down before doing the next one.

oh, and blow on it while you solder.  :icon_wink:
It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.
Maybe I can afford one, if I do a little less drinking. - Fred Eaglesmith

Hold the leads with your fingers, or use some kind of metal heatsink, as suggested above.

  1 Check the data sheet
  2 Observe pinout
3 double up on your triple checking of the pinout.
  4 Heat Iron
5 re-check the pinout while the iron heats up
Mostly a serious Jfet Joke, but getting the pinout right is a big heat/time saver.
