Tubes are overrated!!

Joe D.'s high gain distortion pedals would be real horroshow for death metal
like the Black Fire, or the Obsidian, Massacre etc

In my experience, nothing beats a real hi-gain tube amp for Death Metal. Maybe a tube/solid state hybrid, but the majority of what you hear on the classic albums are straight up Marshalls.
Most of the time a group would use a Marshall (or something similar) with a boost to get that extra edge and saturation.
For example:
Trey Azagthoth used a Marshall JCM900 model 4100 Dual Reverb that's boosted with a ProCo Rat2 (he used a R2DU rack unit) for most of his 90's-era stuff.
The awesome crunch heard on the Carcass "Heartwork" album is a Marshall (either a 6100 Anniversary or an SL-X) boosted with a Gov'nor. Live, they used 6100s and Peavey 5150s.
Some of the earlier Carcass stuff is the Marshall/Rat setup.
I've never been able to get a good Death tone from a pedal alone, and many times it's hard get it with an amp alone too. I highly recommend boosting an amp with overdrive, like a Rat. The Rat2 has done some great things for me in the past with getting some Death from a weak amp.

What style of sound are you looking to do? Could you give an example of a band with the kind of tone you want?

my Digitech Death Metal pedal sounds great into my plexi.  Two things though...

(1) you MUST power it by a DC mains power supply rather than a battery - it has much more punch this way, don't ask me why (it's very noticeable though)
(2) the amp needs to be at a decent level, not bedroom levels (more like 'jamming with a loud drummer' volume)  :icon_biggrin:

Can't comment on the Dr Boogie, but I love the GT2. It is my weapon of choice after trying the usual range of distortions.

What I do: Give the amp some volume, as MetalGod said, and make sure it is starting to break up - so that it only cleans up on the front pickup with the volume wound down a fraction. Then GT2 it, and keep the gain as low as you can while still retaining deathly tone - I usually check to make sure that I get good chunk on the palm mutes. By keeping the gain down on the pedal it really helps with articulation.

My only criticism of the GT2 is that it has a habit of really sounding like the GT2, regardless of what guitar you feed it. This is less pronounced by giving it less gain, and making sure the EQ works in concert with the amp and guitar's eq, but I could see myself investigating something that allowed more of the guitar/amp character through. You can get dangerous amounts of lows in the GT2, and waaaay too much gain. So be careful. Also going to agree with MetalGod on the DC power business. GT2s don't eat batteries but it seems that after a pretty short while they start to lose treble and "punch", and I got sick of this happening.

None of the above info is in any way scientific. I have just played and tweaked a lot with it.

I love the 90s Azagthoth tone though, I may have to investigate that, or at least investigate a Rat/Rat-like pedal

.Personally I am a sucker for solid state dirt boxes going into tube amps. I am going to have to express my hatred on the other hand for all of the hybrids I have tried. I just can't get a decent tone out of them.

The Rat can really be a secret weapon sometimes for getting a wicked death tone. The trick is to set it to a very low gain, like a light crunch; then, set the volume to determine how much added distortion you want; finally, set the filter to dial in the desired amount of hi-frequency chunk. It's really cool because you can get a super distorted tone, but it usually doesn't come out as a fizzy fuzz at all. It's like the Rat doesn't just boost, it also gives the necessary filtering to provide a tight tone.

I used to sometimes play through this guy's setup that used a GT2 for the main distortion, but he had this stupid compressor in the chain too that just sort of ruined everything so I was never able to hear how it was intended to sound! Stupid compressor! That guy put it after the distortion, and it made everything into a squishy mess - you could even hear/feel it "pumping". That guy thought it was "totally killer" for solos or whatever, but I thought it sounded like stupid garbage. I've thought about picking one up used, but it would be mostly to try for DI recording.

Could use some RAT - GT2 - Ampli? The sound may sound more death?
thanks

Yeah, try it by all means Andy! I am not sure how much the GT2 likes other pedals before it, mine seems to get a little... I dunno, worse. I expect some sort of cool gain boost and it just gets crap. But don't let that stop ya!
