What caps to order?

I've already got my Mouser shopping list set for the resistors, but I need a little help with the capacitors.

Caps:
33pf
47pf
100pf
220pf
470pf
.001uF
.0022uF
.0047uF
.0068uF
.01uF
.022uF
.047uF
.100uF
.220uF
.470uF
1uf
2u2
4u7
10uf
22uf
47uf
100uf

Which should be ceramic disc, which should be electrolytic, etc.?  What are good brands?  I'm a little confused with what the help page here said.

Without knowing the circuit, these recommendations are general in nature...

These can usually be ceramic disk. The muRata items on page 697 of the latest catalog should work.

Caps:
33pf     - 81DEA1X3A330JC1B
47pf     - 81DEA1X3A470JC1Bv
100pf   - 81DEA1X3A101JA2B
220pf   - 81DEA1X3A221JA2B
470pf   - 81DEA1X3A471JA1B

For these, I like the AVX films, page 706...

Quote
.001uF     - 581=BQ014D0102J (or K for 10% tolerance)
.0022u F  - 581=BQ014D0222J
.0047uF   - 581=BQ014D0472J
.0068uF   - 581=BQ014D0682J
.01uF      - 581=BQ014D0103J
.022uF    - 581=BQ014D0223J
.047uF    - 581=BQ014D0473J
.100uF    - 581=BQ014D0104J
.220uF    - 581=BQ014D0224J
.470uF    - 581=BQ074D0474J

This value can be electrolytic or film. I prefer spending more for the film, as it saves board space.

1uf     - 581=BQ074D0105J

These are either electrolytic or tantalum. Electros are cheaper...
These are all 16v, page 632.

Quote
2u2     - 140-XRL16V2.2-RC
4u7     - 140-XRL16V4.7-RC
10uf    - 140-XRL16V10-RC
22uf    - 140-XRL16V22-RC
47uf    - 140-XRL16V47-RC
100uf    - 140-XRL16V100-RC

I'm sure other folks have their favorites. Also, Aron and Small Bear sell caps, but since you are placing an order with Mouser anyway...

Thanks for the tips!  Now I have a saved "project" for a resistor kit and a capacitor kit.  Next up, some transistors, diodes, and IC's for the circuits I want to build!

Caps can be the hardest thing to order.
Take the time and check the physical dimensions of the caps.

dmx1 has given you very good advice.
But I will add my own notes of caution.

If the value is in pF, that will most likely be a ceramic. You can also choose Silver Mica, but these will be larger in size. They "may" sound smoother depending on who you ask.

The AVX box caps are very small for their values but may be too small for some layouts.
They have very short legs too. I've had to solder on extenders from time to time.
JD Sleeps's GGG layouts almost alway provide two pads for the film caps letting you use the small,
short legged film caps or the larger greenies. What a guy eh? You gotta love him for that.

The Xicon "greenies" get to be very large in size starting at .22uf. The 1uf greenies are absolutely giant (see pic below)
Xicon has a handful of useful values in the greenie package under the heading "Sub-miniature film caps".
These should be on the same page as the standard Xicon green film caps. Look for them. Very useful
They have long legs and work anywhere on any layout size wise.

There are also small, or sub-miniture version of Electro caps. I think Xicon call them 7mm high Electros in the Mouser catalog. These are nice and small too.
Another thing to look for with electros is the voltage rating. The bigger the voltage rating the larger the physical size.
The same value E cap in a higher voltage will be larger than one with a lower rating.
I first look for 25v caps but sometimes you are forced to go with a 100v or larger rating to get the value your after.
Thats where the 7mm high ones come in.

Good luck. Ordering cap is a bitch. It just takes a lot longer than picking out resistors.

PS: Here is a pic of a GGG EA tremolo board. Note the giant greenie film caps at 0.22uF, 0.47uF, and 1uF.
I did this build becore discovering the Xicon sub-minature and the AVX "yellow" boxed film caps.

It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.

Oh, wow... I didn't even think about the size thing.  I wonder if there is a print catalog I can get, from anywhere really, that will give some physical dimensions so I can just pick what I want on a physical page before ordering on Mouser.  Computers are great and all, but some things are just easier in the physical realm!

If you have the item listed on Mouser's web page, you can click on the link called 'Data Sheet'. This sheet will usually have the physical size and lead spacing. Once you place an order from Mouser, you should start receiving their printed catalog. Beware - this thing is huge and heavy. An extra box of chocolate covered cherries for your letter carrier this holiday deason may be in order...

I'm the novice here but I will swear by my choice in components.

Electrolytic, the bright green high temp Xicons have sounded by far the best for me:

For the basic circuits I've built and experimented with, I've gotten the raunchiest harmonic squeals out of the fore mentioned over all others.
