Well, I breadboarded The minimal screamer from the technology of the tube screamer article over at www.geofex.com

It gives overdrive, from nearly no drive to lots of drive adjusting the gain pot.

Problem is, it has nothing to do with diodes!

I can yank the clipping diodes and it stays exactly the same. No change

Only thing I can think of is ... it says to use a CMOS opamp in the minimal screamer, and i used a 4558. Would this cause the issue? I am not even sure what a cmos is, so any info would be appreciated

try other diodes... you might have damaged diode or not properly soldered.
Look at it this way- everyone rags on air guitar here because everyone can play guitar.  If we were on a lawn mower forum, air guitar would be okay and they would ridicule air mowing.

Yeah, you need to use either a CD4049UB or a CD4069UB chip, they're cmos 14 or 16 pin devices.
VERY different setup than a standard opamp, though you CAN make 'em do a similar job !
They get used for switching and other duties nprmally.
MM.

BTW , STM from runoffgroove made a nice "UBE screamer" with one , it's in the FXX archives.

If you are referring to Jack Orman's minimal Tube Screamer ("Son of Screamer"), it uses a regular opamp. A 4558 should work fine (it's after all the original one). Probably something wrong with your diodes (or how they are soldered).

i have tried a multitude of diodes, and i didnt make the son of screamer, I mad the "minimal screamer" which calls for the CMOS. I will try the ube screamer now!   Thanks

The CMOS opamp isn't the main thing in the minimal screamer, the diodes cause most of the distortion. So your build contains some kind of error :). But if it sounds good, fine.
