Output buffer

Guys can please anyone tell me what is output buffer exactly for? Does it just help to make low output impedance?

  Driving long cables and low impedance inputs..
   Does it just help to make low output impedance?   
    For the above reasons if help is needed, then yes.
     If you want your guitar pickup / vol control connected to a FF...it won't be with a buffer between them.
