if you can use the voltage invertor with the boost function to boost the -V up to -17v, it might be easier to simply send your +9vdc to two separate max1044 chips - one boosting the +supply and one inverting and boosting the -supply...  sounds simple but probably won't work... :'(  someone prove me wrong!

i'm looking for a way to do this without having to deal with ac mains...

thanks so much for the input guys will look at the schems nofi but the site is down , hopefully they want be too complicated , would vero or strip be good for this or do i need to make a pcb.

and is it ok to solder the mains power (disconnected obviously) to the board?

The easiest way to do this without messing with mains voltages is to use something like the GGG bipolar power supply or the schematic that Gus linked to and just use an AC wallwart instead of the transformer. That's what I'd do.
I don't think MAX1044 or ICL7660 charge pumps will work with this as they probably can't provide enough current.

cheers chaps

Looking at the transformers in Rapid there are a few that do 15 - 18v outputs will that still be AC? I know its a silly question but I have got to learn

Right think I have got it now chaps, thanks for all the input but now for the safety

FUSES - will it suffice if I have one that is built into the iec socket and switch or should I put a second fuse in and if so where

Cheers
