These both seem to be general purpose NPN switching transistors.  Is there any reason to use one over the other?

Much thanks for any replies ;D

5089 have more gain than 5088

no reason i can think off other than gain requirements, thats all that concerns me with the trannies we all use.

Why Hfe of my 2n5089 (598hfe) is lower than 2n5088 (630hfe)? Isn't it guys lower Hfe lower gain? Correct me if i'm wrong.  Also I have read somewhere before that 5089 is more quieter is it right? I print out both datasheet but technically i'm not knowledgable can someone help me on this :icon_frown: I'm waiting for my CA3080 for my ROSS compressor project I have both 5088 and 5089, which one is more quieter to use?

Thanks,
Roger

The 5089 is quieter but the spec sheets I found where the same for both.

5088 and 5089 are low noise amplifier transistors, at least that's the original design. The only lower noise, higher gain transistors commonly available are the MPSA18, which was designed purely for low noise audio. There are some Japanese types that are designed for low noise audio, too, but this is the case in US designs.

2N3904 is a general purpose switching transistor.

If you're amplifying, the 5088/89 are the ticket in NPNs unless you need all you can get. I believe that the 89 was originally a high gain/low noise sort of the 5088s. That may not be true today.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Thanks R.G. I'm going to use 5089 for my Ross Comp project co'z I have 5pcs of this only 2pcs of 5088. I can't wait for my CA3080 order :icon_biggrin:

Thanks everyone too..
