Hi Guys,

Just got a "100w stereo amplifier" at a yeardsale for 4 dollars, made by nikko. I opened it up, hoping to find tubes, none there. There is a giant black box, though. I am wondering, is this a power transformer or an output transformer? Marking is TKP0137-2     T-1-332

Thanks

  What's it hooked up to?
Probably a PT, see if you can trace the wiring  to AC input, [output iron is often a forgone pleasure for SS designs], unplugged isn't necessarily 'safe'..figure out amp safety conditions before going inside an amp with HV.
I typed 'draining filter capacitors' in google, and found
  http://www.google.com/search?q=draining+filter+caps&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7DKUS
  Information on amp safety.
Potentially lethal voltages require understanding amplifier filter cap conditions, read..before you proceed.
If there's only one transformer, it's probably a PT.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

If there are no tubes there, it's most likely a power transformer.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
