Hi guys,

Has anyone tried modding the new Vox 847a? Its the new version thats made in china and has a dc jack.

I has a look inside and it wasn't the usual 847 that i was used to seeing. The inductor was somewhat hexagonal in shape (had vox logo on it) compared to the previous round black ones like those used in the gcb95. Also the pot has some kind of pcb on it.

The layout was different that the old ones and it seemed the parts (ie caps, resistors etc) seem to be soldered on the top of the board. Did not get to see the bottom.

Is it a simple case of just comparing the components to the old ones and changing those same ones?

How did this version sound?

Thanks!

JL

While I've got no actual "hands-on" experience with this one, I can tell you that it has a double-sided PCB with both through-hole and surface-mount components.  Mitch Colby (Vox) and I talked this one over about a year or so ago.  According to him, the inductor was to be their reproduction of the TDK5103 cube inductor found in a lot of (US) Thomas Organ/Thomas International wahs.  I offered some suggestions at that time but did not get actively involved in the design or production.

Thanks Geoff. It nice the guy I buy pedals from actually responds in these forums!

I guess no has has really tried to do anything with this new version of the wah. I'm tempted to buy it because its cheap (equivalent to USD65 here in sg). But will probably wait and while to decide.

I guess its probably takes more than an inductor to make a good wah. So if anyone has heard or tried to mod this incarnation of the vox 847, please update this thread so we can all learn something.

Cheers.

Just in case anyone was wondering the same thing as me. Here's someone who tried modding the new Vox 847a.

Apparently, some things can be modded but most can't because components don't lend themselves easily to being modded.

Merry Christmas and Cheers everyone.
