Hi,

I am looking for a alternative to the LM308 in my rat.
Mine is very noisy and muddy. I'm looking for something with a brighter tone, that still could get darker. Quiet is important though.

A few suggestions would be good, so I could try them out.

Thanks

Any single opamp should work.  I had a 741 in mine for a while and just realized I have a 5534 that I will be trying.  Don't forget to pull the compensation cap of of the 1 and 8 pins of the opamp.

Quotecompensation cap?

That would be the 30pf cap

IMHO, there is no better ic then the lm308 for the rat.
the circuit sounds more "alive" with it. (i've only tried  two other ic's though)

I've tried with TL061, TL071, TL081, to me the TL061 sounds better.....don't ask me why because i have no idea !  ;D
If you want to give it a try, remove the 30pF cap

You can also try removing the 47 ohm resistor the goes to the 2,2µF cap and replace it for a 1K B pot or 1K trimmer .

Compensated opamp like LM308 has 'compensation pins', which are pins 1 & 8 [ciir, need to double check that..and this>].
High frequency compensation...allows you to adjust the HF gain inside the opamp.
Pulling the cap in my case means pulling on a buncha wires etc. and board to see boards bottom, a much easier solution I think I may try is using a single opamp, and pulling pins 1 and 8 out to the sides to N/C them...[doing without the internal HF compensation.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

So just pulling 1 and 8 to the side?

I think I will go order myself a TL061,71 and 81

The tl070 is a better match due to the use of the comp cap like the 308.  The NE5534 is as well.  Both sound good and slightly different.  ;)

Do a search on "rat" "lm308" "tl070".

This has been discussed here for years.
