I've built it using the GGG board, sounds pretty good for a (what i'd call) heavy distortion.  But i need to tame the "icepick" high end of this thing.  The tone control goes from icepick to mud SUPER quick, and I can't seem to find anything in between.  Maybe I'm hearing a mid hump, but shifted higher to the mid-highs.  I still want the ability for a bright setting, I just need tame down that high-mid screeeeeech.  Should I be looking at the tone control area, or the filter in the feedback path??

You could try putting some resistance between the 3.3n cap and ground to make more of a shelf that a straight cut off.

From the sound of what you are saying you aren't getting the right frequency range cut/lowered so you'll have to play with the cap to ground value as well. Maybe something like .01 and a temporary 1k trimmer in series to ground so you can find the right shelf point.
Since the 3.3nf is so small it's really only dropping the high end . Making it .01 will drop the cut off and with the resistnace to ground will preserve a little more upper end with a gentler slope curve.

thanks John, I'll give that a try.  I'll put a .01 and a trimmer in there...

Hey i very like this circuit. i use it like my main distortion since a while
i added a 22 pf cap in a feedback loop to tame the high and and change C3 for a 0,47uF
for more low end.

I'd use a lower value pot for the tone control. I always set it to the treble side.
BTW, I use mine to push my amp, not as a distortion.

yes, I like the tone to the treb side, it's just a bit too spikey.  I changed the 1M gain pot to a 500k, as I never really want to get overly distorted.

@Mich-  I might try those suggestions, thanks.
