Proximity controlled effects

Just dreaming for fun here.  What about an effect that was  activated or controlled the way a theremin is, maybe a metal plate mounted on the pickguard.  Maybe a vibrato moving your hand without a whammy bar, maybe more distortion the closer your hand approaches. There must be such a thing, already, and I haven't seen it.
Just had minor surgery, didn't eat for almost 2 days, had general anesthesia, got supply of Vicodin,  my brain has kind of left the building, anybody in their right mind have any thoughts here?

Matt Belamy from muse has a Fuzz probe built into one of his guitars to do a similar thing to what you describe.

You could always try emailing Zach about it or try Mason himself as he built the guitar.
