Need Help with Inbuilt Fuzz

I've built a fuzz circuit into my guitar however it doesnt work properly.  i have the negative battery terminal connected to the sleeve of the guitar output however it works when im holding both the negative terminal and the ground wire in my hand. im pretty new to all this so i dont understand why this is happening.

are you sure what you connected the negative lead to was the sleeve?
