Hey Guys,

First, I'm a totally newbie

Second, I have some questions about capacitors.

I'm going to try my hand at the Radio Shack Noisy Cricket.

Here is the build sheet
http://www.beavisaudio.com/Projects/NoisyCricket/MarkII/NoisyCricketMarkII_RadioShack_Rev2.pdf

When I went to Radio Shack, they didn't have film caps they only had ceramic.  Will this work?

Also, the rating on the build is in nf, all the caps there were rated in uf.  Is there a way to convert them, or does someone have a good resource for me to learn on the different ratings?

Thanks in advance

1. Read the FAQ.
2. In particular about capacitors; all caps are separated into (a) polarized and (b) non polarized. Polarized caps MUST be used in a way that the instantaneous voltage never gets reversed from the polarity marking. Non-polarized caps can be used with DC voltage either way, or pure AC. Polarized caps are made because you can get much higher capacitance in a small package with this technology. Otherwise, you would always use non polarized caps.
3. You will see a lot of magic mojo talk about the differences in sound of capacitors. As a beginner, ignore it. Use what caps you can get, and if you later need to change them out for perfect sounding lah-di-dah caps, do that. Your big challenge right now is getting anything to work at all. Which leads to - use the ceramics or films as you can get them. They will work.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

And just to double check:

47nf would be the same as .047uf

and

100nf would be the same as .1uf

For general cap information, look at that. I learned a lot from it! :)

You need a glade plug-in, in on a footswitch.  Kick on the big muff, then hit the air freshener pedal.

Once again,

Thanks for all the help.

It is amazing how quick the responses come, and how generous you guys are with info.

Thanks

Just for reference Andy, when you get your caps, they should be marked like this:

47nf    =  473
100nf  =  104

...had me confused when I started out
