Hello,

I try to obtain Rammstein's "Du Hast" guitar sound, but i don't know how.
I suppose that i must to use an EQ (i'm not sure how), but, mainly, what distortion i must to use?

Thx a lot!

You need a glade plug-in, in on a footswitch.  Kick on the big muff, then hit the air freshener pedal.

Obsidian it's impossible to build it here...i'm still searching for BS250, but I didn't found one from from 6 month :D

I saw a picture of them the guitarist had a wolfgang guitar and 5150 amp. Everyone loves Eddie. One of my favorite bands Zao uses the 5150 head so I have heard that amp a lot. My guess is that the amp is most of there sound. Add a bit of studio magic= compression and your in.
Class A booster , Dod 250 , Jfet booster, Optical Tremolo, Little Gem 2,  mosfet boost, Super fuzz , ESP stand alone spring reverb red Llama omni-drive , splitter blender ,

NEVER use gorilla glue for guitar repairs! It's Titebond , Elmers, or Superglue

The Obsidian looks like a relatively simple build.
How about a substitue for the BS250 ? Anyone ?

Edit: Oh, never mind. Smallbear has got them.

you can build it with 2n7000 (n-channel mosfet)

or

trying the BJT version (with 2n5088 transistor)

WGTP

I have an Obsidian on the breadboard at the moment with BS170's which are very similar to 2N7000's.  Modded Vox tone control.  The BS250's are supposed to be quieter and are P channel rather than N, so you have to reverse the electrolytic caps and battery.

If you can't get Mosfets, use the 2N5089 or 2N5088's and build a Blackfire or Vulcan.  ;)

The Obsidian looks like a relatively simple build.
I thought it had lots of crossing wires when I built it long time ago.
I was reading the Si version had lower noise.

Obsidian sound clips here:

I experimented with this Rammstein sound today, and got VERY close using the following equipment:

Gibson SG with 490 HB (treble pickup), into a Big Daddy with tonestack and a notch filter on the output, into a class A tube amp (12ax7 - 6L6) feeding a 4 ohm Jensen P8R.

I guess a lot of other pedals will give simillar results.

Thx a lot for your kindness....I listened to the samples and it sounds very good.

One thing is unclear to me: what means  "Big Daddy with tonestack and a notch filter on the output"?

You speak about Danelectro Big Daddy?

Oops. Sorry. Probably lots of pedals with that name. No, I'm reffering to the Runoffgroove Big Daddy, found here:
http://www.runoffgroove.com/grace.html

I made my own perf layout for this one. You'll fine it here:
http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/v/Krinor/Big+Daddy.gif.html

The notch filter is a passive bass boost which I just jammed in between the output of the cicuit and the volume pot.
It sucks a lot of volume but that can be compensated by turning up the amp.
I found the information on this kind of filter here:
http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=64418.0

Just follow the links in that thread. Look for twin-t notch filters or bridged-t notch filters.
I'd post a layout for the whole thing (Big Daddy with tone control and mid scoop), but I'm still experimenting with this pedal and plan to put in a gainstage after the filter to bring up the volume. So time will show how it turns out.

gigimarga

Wooow...the Big Daddy is big...it sounds amazing :)
I hope i will have enough time to build one tomorrow...
For the notch filter i must to read more!

Thx a lot!!

The filter (or any other kind of mid scoop) is a must-have if you're after a darker metal sound.

This is how it looks:

You can solder this little circuit together in mid air between the circuit output and volume lug 3.
You should also add a tonecontrol to the circuit. A simple treble roll off will do. Just search the forum and you'll find lots of examples.
All in all this is a very simple approach to a very gainy metal type distortion IMO.

If this doesn't work, try the Sansamp.

In that period, Rammstein played Mesa/Boogie Dual Rects and used Sansamps to shape their sound.
