This is my fifth project, LM 386 synth-fuzz octave down effect, unstable but good sounding synth sound. It is very simple project:
- pin 3 of 386 as input,
- connect pin 1 and pin 8 together,
- pin 2 and 4 to ground,
- 10 mF capacitor from pin 7 to pin 5 (electrolytic + at pin 7),
- out from pin 5
- 2,2 mF el. capacitor at the end of the circuit (- to ground).
- 9v battery at pin 6y this
Try this little beast and suggest any mods for better stability.

maybe this will help if you haven't seen it yet, http://www.geocities.com/tpe123/folkurban/fuzz/snippets.html?200726. scroll down a bit past halfway till you get to the rambler and marginally better rambler. they're octave up but i figured it couldn't hurt to pass on.

I tried to breadboard this today, and I'm having some trouble.  Regardless of input, it just gives this sputtering sound, sort of like an oscillator turned down below the audible range.  I know it's supposed to be unstable, but as I've done it there is no reaction whatsoever to changing input signals.

It's pretty simple, so I'm not sure what I could've done wrong.

Here's the voltages I'm getting on the pins of the LM386:
1.  jumping between 1.05 and 1.09 V
2.  0V (ground)
3.  0V
4.  0V (ground)
5.  jumping between 3.92 and 4.28
6.  8.86V (Vcc)
7.  jumping between 4.05 and 4.41 V
8.  jumping between 1.05 and 1.09 V

Has anyone else built this?  I'm confused. ???
