A tip for anyone is to get a double-ended bicycle spanner (the 'dogbone' type). These fit all of the main nuts on pedal builds and ensure safe tightening of nuts on pots, jacks, footswitches and the like. You only need the one spanner - they cover 10 sizes, 5 on each end.

Forget pliers, scored cases and chewed nuts. Mine is a Cyclo brand, high quality and made in England. Bought from Wilkinson's (here in the England) for about £1.60.

Interesting though. I had no idea!

I use a mini adjustable-wrench.  Works fine, but adjustment is a bit of a chore - I can see the appeal of one of these spanners.  Not sure if the second one I linked to would work with pots though; would all depend on whether the shaft fits through the hole on the other side of the cube (hence the question).

The second one is the right type, though it looks like it may be a copy of the Cyclo. The one I got from Wilkinson's is really well made. Pot shafts go right through.

Thanks for the feedback Mick.  My brother lives round the corner from a cycle shop so next time I visit I'll pick one up.
