can someone name me some (old, new, european, asian, whatever) general purpose NPN types? i know the high gain BC547/549, 2N2222 etc but medium and low gain seems harder to find. i've got some old 2N1613 but they seem quite expensive. any others?

2n3904 are low to medium gain about 180 - 200.
If you can find them 2N3053 are very nice low gain transistors. The few I've got have  gains of around 70 -120. They sound very nice in FF or Tonebender circuits.
I've also used BD439s these are medium power transistors but they have gains of around 100. They sound good in simple circuits like Range Masters, I haven't tried them in anything more complicated.

I think 2N1711 could be what you are looking for. http://www.futurlec.com/Transistors/2N1711.shtml
And other candidates are 2N3903, 2N1893, 2N2219 and 2N2369.

gains around 100 would be ideal

I bought a bunch of assorted trannies a while back, I may have some I could send you, I see you're in Belgium, I would have to check how much it would cost to get them to you.

you should use them yourself ;)
an harmonic percolator for example sounds best with both transistors (ge and si) around 80. at least to my ears :p

i have some for the moment, i was just looking for other types to look for when mine are gone.

Hi
Many high power devices have low hFE.  There are dozens of devices to choose from.  At the low power end (1W and hFE=150), there's the BD139.  An MJE3055 is good for 115W and hFE of about 50 (depends on the Ic).  The TIPs fall between those two extremes, with a couple of devices in the region you are looking for.

You could piggyback something.  (Is there some extra "mojo" in piggybacking?)

Use the search function, too.
cheers
