Can I substitue a metal box, formed from cold rolled steel, instead of the usual aluminum ones with no problems, etc.?

Yes.

But...

They are harder to make holes in, they oxidize, in general harder to handle.

As already mentioned, a steel box is obviously harder to drill, but otherwise it should be OK.  I believe that a steel box will offer better shielding from low frequency electromagnetic fields than a cast alloy box.
