Wire- Im finally happy

My new wire makes me happy. I have been in search of some good wire to use that could withstand a fair amount of abuse. I am always trying new mod ect.. and needed a tough wire that could stand being moved around a lot, withstand a lot of heat so I don't accidently burn a hole through other wires while in the process of modding or making changes to an effect/pedal, and something that isn't too stiff to maneuver into an enclosure. This is 22 awg Teflon from www.effectsconnection.com/oscommerce  Fast service! And great product! At a good price - Red 22 AWG Teflon insulated silver plated wire 10 feet for $2.50.

I like 19/36 teflon, myself. $42 for 100 feet at Mouser.

Ouch $42 I wish mouser sold in small volumes like 50ft. That way if I dont like it Im not stuck w it like I am with some other stuff.

Most people don't need 100ft, and if you want multiple colors, you are out of luck.

Someone should buy a multicolor assortment of spools and sell them by the foot.

Received my order from them a couple of days ago. Got all 10 colors - awesome wire. No shrinkback when heated, stays in place very nicely - just overall nice stuff.

My one complaint ? - it's too dang slippery. I like to score it then twist then end off to make a nice twisted end to tin up and use.
I can't get a good enough grip on this stuff to do that with.....must be my fat fingers.

Mine is sliipery as well. I ended up getting actual wire cutters with an 22 as an option. It actually cuts it perfectly.

Apex Jr. is much cheaper then all these places for PTFE @ $9 for 100' of 24AWG and $12 for 100' of 22AWG.  Never ordered from them but I've heard nothing but good things around the net.

I use teflon for amp builds and like it a lot. But for pedal circuits I think it is overkill (and expensive).

The main advantage of teflon is that it is stiff and stays in place for long wire runs like this:

For pedals I use surplus 22 AWG hookup wire and I've been real happy with it:

I emailed him this morning and here's what he said...

I mostly have 19 strand but in some 24 Awg is 7 strand...
I also have solid core. 5 colors in 22 Awg and 2 colorsin 24 Awg

I found this package at Micro Center for 10 bucks and it would definitely be great for choice of colors in a multipack!  And there's double the amount of red and black!  Sorry, I didn't buy it but I plan on it next payday and will report back.

The strand count has all to do with the wires stiffness and staying put.
A wire with a lot of strands is more flexible but won't stay bent at you want.
A wire with fewer stands is more like solid core wire, stays put yet is a more flexible and stronger than solid core.
Less apt to break do to some flexing.

Silver-plated copper wire shouldn't be used in any equipment that may be exposed to humidity over 50%. The silver reacts with the copper and causes the copper to turn into rust ("red plague"). Yes, this can only happen in the presence of oxygen, but it is very easy to "nick" a wire when stripping, even with the best tools and training. I have seen lengths of silver-plated copper wire in aircraft that still had continuity but had increased in resistance to several kOhms per foot. Tinned copper does not have this problem.. Silver lowers the resistance, but I can't believe there's an audible difference.
