bringing down the value of a pot...

If I had a 100k pot and I attached a 47K resistor to the travel to ground what would I essentially be making the value? (I'm at work and cannot test this unfortunately). How would I figure this out for other values as well? Thanks.

Click on the GEOFEX link above, and read "The Secret Life of Pots"...it explains tailoring pots in much detail.   In your case, I believe you would be altering the taper only...placing a resistor ACROSS the entire pot will change the value, as in R1xR2/R1+R2.   Depends on whether you're using it as a current divider or voltage divider...

Yes, the taper will be affected as well as the total resistance.
Basically you will be making a super audio taper pot.
Usually a resistor 20% of the total pot value (connected from wiper to ground) will make a linear taper pot into a pretty standard audio taper pot.
