what is the diode D3 functioning as?

Its optional and well it got crushed and I was wondering if i could put an LED in its place and how the LED might affect the sound....

thanks scott
put it together, now take it apart

Looks like reverse polarity protection. Keeps from harming your circuit if the battery or dc jack is put in backwards.

You don't need it, it's to save your circuit like Ian says above.  Purely optional, but a good idea.  Note its orientation: The diode won't conduct unless the battery is reversed etc. When it does, it burns out rather quickly, hopefully saving the more important parts down the line.   Not guaranteed to work, but it is better than nothing!
