1n34a pinout help

1n34a- Is the cathode (the marked end I need)   1.  the red inside the diode (it's red on both ends!!?)

or

2.  the grey foggy mark on the end.  I assumed (first mistake) it would be red.  First time using these.  Thanks for your help.

You sure that's a 1N34a? Looks like a 1N270 to me...Probably so many things wrong with that statement.

My guess is the dark end is the cathode...You could try it both ways. Why not test it with a DMM to see?

Hi.
Ignore the red bits.  They're just for decoration  :icon_wink:.  (Wot would I know?)

The negative end (for conduction) (aka the cathode, but why use such a 19th century term?) is marked with a black or grey band.

Weird... I've never seen one that looked quite like that. Maybe it's the macro close-up shot. Nice photo!
