Does anyone know, can I use copper wire, at the correct guage, to wire up my perfboard components or should I just go and buy some bare tinned wire from small bear? (can't find any at my electronic shop :s)

ayayay!

Yes stranded copper wire is fine.  Strip a little insulation off and tin it, then place in the board.

Generally when using perf board you can just bend the leads of the components over to make the conections. And use any off cuts from resistors and caps to do the rest.

Stranded is good (necessary) for off-board connections, but on the board itself, I would use single strand wire.
The wire from the inside of phone cables is perfect.
You will soon go crazy using stranded wire to connect up perfboard!

...If you just want less hassle, you could buy the pre-tinned wire from Small Bear, and only have 1 type of wire to worry about.

Resistor leads, from the resistor or separate make good wires [short, but great ok for board work].
  Pre-Tinning the ends...an option I find useful.
