Hey guys, quick question here..im reading alot to swap 2 LEDs into a clipping section, and everyone jsut says red LEDs...well theres a ton of different voltage red leds, does that matter? I mean ive got a bunch of em from a friend but i think theyre all between 9-15v (yes theyre big)

Thanks in advance

generally i'd say most people use 3mm or 5mm and you don't have to limit yourself to red. you can use/try just about any led with varying degrees of success. if you don't have any, get yourself some sockets until you learn what you like. rylan

If you mean the really huge ones, no, they're not useful for effects. When people say "red LEDs" they mean single-diode LEDs. The bigger LEDs are multiple-LED devices. If what you have is intended to run on 9 to 15V, they will not even begin to clip in an effect.

The red LEDs they mean are the 3mm to 5mm diameter packages, noted as T-1 or T-1 3/4. The clipping voltage they will have will be between 1.2V and 1.8V, depending on the exact recipe they used to make them.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
