I have built several tonebenders to the original schematic and all have been too quiet, too much hiss etc. even after adjusting voltages around the transistors and I know that other people have posted the same problems. I really like the sound of a good tonebender however, and as it was raining on Saturday I decided to have one final go. I used two Hitachi 2SB156 transistors for 1 and 2, gains as measured with a DMM at 65 and 75 respectively and a TFK AC178 with heat sink measured at 140 for transistor 3.
I'm really glad I did because this is loud, extreme fuzz at it's best. It has less hiss than my 'matched pair' FF and incedible sustain. I also used a Mullard OA10 diode in a black glass case that I managed to find, making it a real NOS build.

I dickered around with tonebender designs too ... lots of dickering ... and I now have it as my main distortion/fuzz
