Non-autowah use of envelope controllers

I've read it, and from what I understand, by subbing the "filter" block with any effect, using LDRs and LED's, you can control any charasteristic of the unit by your picking strength. What I'm looking for is a simple "envelope detector circuit" (as named in the article above), which will drive the LED. The one from Mutron needs a bipolar power supply, and I want to use the envelope detector just as a part of a bigger project, so the simpler the circuit is, the better is suits my requirements.

There aren't many other optical auto-wahs, but maybe there are other units I can take the envelope detector circuit from?

Look at Tim Escobedo's Ugly Face, it's envelope is stupid simple.
It does have quite a bit of ripple, but hey... I think that just adds character...  ;D
It's supposed to sound that way.
