While at my local candy (electronics supply) store, picking up various parts (sockets, solder, LM386, perfboards, other stuff) I saw some MPSA13's. I thought to myself, theres something I saw that I want to build that uses those.
But now I forget what the hell it was.
Some kind of overdrive, distortion or fuzz probably. Or maybe it was an Octave Fuzz.

Anyone want to try and refresh my memory here? :)
(getting old sucks :) )

Not sure where the schem went, but the layout is still in that thread.

Edit: here it is! http://www.freewebs.com/soulkitchen/schematics.htm

There's also the Whirlygig Trem Fuzz that uses two mpsa13's.

The fuzz face that tcobretti posted a while back had darlingtons and a bmp tone stack, as well. It's in the big muff/fuzz face hybrid thread, I think.

5TH GEAR OVERDRIVE and BASS GRINDER, both on the LAYOUT GALLERY - they should be pretty easy to build too...

Both ROGs bass fuzz and the bass grinder are common user of the MPSA13.

The Bazz Fuss might have been it.
Although that Buzz Box looks cool.

Big Muff/Fuzz Face hybrid sounds interesting as well.
And I do have several pre-built BM tonestacks laying around.

Any other ideas, feel free to keep them coming :) (not even necessarily OD/Dist or Fuzz related).

Thanks.

picking three teeth at a time ;D
i forgot to mention when i put up those links . i think the buzz box sounds better with mpsa13s instead of the ones on the schematic

yeah. I have one of those (pawn shop score for like $25, as I've said many times before, I'm such a pawn shop whore). Did all sorts of the usual mods to it. Still thought it sounded like crap. Till I did the Fat Mod to it ( http://www.diyguitarist.com/DIYStompboxes/WahMod1.htm ).
Sounds INCREDIBLE now.

I may have to go for the Buzz Box though.

They work well in the Ampeg Scrambler circuit in place of the 2N3506 transistors.
If you play around a bit you can get a good overdrive sound using them in a differential amp configuration. Before I moved house I had some success with this. When I get things in order I'll check it out again.

Cheers,
Stew.

I'm gonna take a stab and say Dyna Comp?

The MPSA18 is a popular transistor in that pedal.

Well....Kind of hard to say, but it just has more body to it.
It a very easy mod (took me about 10 minutes) and its easily reversible.
I HIGHLY recommend this mod.
