is there a silicon diode that can be used in place of the 1n100 or 1n34 in the orange squeezer? must it be germanium? i wouldn't imagine so, but any thought would be appreciated.

You can try a 1N914, but it will change the characteristics of the sound.  A germanium diode typically conducts around .3V, but a silicon has a Vf of .7v.
You can get some Ge's from Small Bear, worth keeping some around!
