callate gate help please

hi, i have built 2 of the gates from tonepad using their boards, neither of them works. Before I follow the debugging guidlines I'm hoping to eliminate some maybe real noobie errors.

The recommended IC is listed as 4558, i have used jrc4558d is that ok?

I used 2 barrel shaped np caps where the pcb seems to suggest large square caps should be (i have seen these in build photos too)could this be my error?

Both boards are ok in bypass but produce nothing when switched on other than some interference.
