Hey guys

Have spent the last hour or so abusing the search function and couldn't come up with a definitive answer to this:

What sort of cap should I be using in my TS808 clone where the 1uF NP/BP is specified?

Am building from the GGG schematic and am referring to C2 and C8.

* I can get an NP electro, but have read that they don't sound so flash.  Can we elaborate on that?
* I can also get a 'crossover' type cap, which just seems to be a 100V rated version of the above?
* I can get a Metallised Polypropylene which I'd also read would be a nice choice, but at $2.60 each, are they worth it??
* Final choice would be an MKT (is this the one that is commonly called a Film Cap?) in either 0.68uF or 1.5uF.  But not 1uF.  Would either of these be OK?

Thanks guys!
Aidan

You can get 1uf film caps fairly inexpensively. That's the route I would go. Look for the maroon "chiclet" caps in the 1uf size. I get them surplus for about 25 cents a piece. I'm sure Mouser et. al. have them.

Thanks Doug - I'm in Australia, so can't justify an order for just a couple of caps.  So that pretty much limits me to two rather ordinary stores, of which Jaycar (the links I posted) is the best...

The ones I posted are the best I could find.

I'd be interested in the answer to this also.....I just finished one based on the BYOC ckt bd and I got the wrong one.....so I used the NP electrolytic...I been wondering if the box caps made much difference....the ones I have are radial and don't fit the board....

Check with smallbear. He might have them. I know he carries the maroon film caps but I don't know if he has 1uf's.

I know Steve's got box style 1uf NP caps.

They look like the box like blue caps in this pic I got from Tonepad:

You can parallel two or three smaller values if  you don't have a 1u. eg  a 0.68 and a .33 or two .47's etc , just to get you close

Thanks guys

I know that Mouser, Smallbear etc do have the right stuff, but again, for something this small, I don't want to have to order from overseas.  So I'd want to source these locally (and immediately  ;))

So which of the options above is viable?

I have built several of GGGs TS-808 boards and I have always used the 1uF NP Aluminum Electrolytics. Link Below.  Good prices and they deliver quickly. Cheap too. I think you can get 10 or so for like $1.

you could try using a tantalum cap.  I think I read that most of the world's tantalum is being mined out of Australia, so you'd be supporting a local industry.

The size/lead spacing of the box-type from small bear is perfect for the tonepad and GGG boards

Well, I'll be d@mned...

Dick Smith have got em!

I didn't even consider seriously looking for them there - Dick Smith is our equivalent of Radio Shack.  Once mighty, now a shadow of their former self, selling GPS's, stereos, phones and a tiny array of components :-(

Thanks for all the help team!

jaycar have 1uF box caps, little yellow ones. Acttualy, jaycar has a fair few cool parts, you should get one of their catalogs with part numbers in it, makes finding what you need easier.

Don't forget Altronics.  The same item is available for half the price of Jaycar or DSE.

They have shops in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide (Aztronics).

Jaycar has 1uF MKT style grey film caps and 1uF tantalum caps...the tants are traditional in an 808, but the film probably sound better. There's a place called Wiltronics which is very good too - http://www.wiltronics.com.au/ - I occasionally buy a big pile of MKT caps from them. Very fast delivery.
