A quick question about buffers...

I just recently completed the AMZ Jfet Splitter so i could run a line to my effects and a separate line to my tuner.  I noticed something, probably very commonplace, but it just made me wonder.  Full clean signal with 9V hooked up, but when I pulled the cable the signal got very quiet and dull.  This raised a questions:

1.  Should this happen?  Should signal (albeit weak) still pass with no voltage supplied to buffer circuits?

Really just wanting to know that I haven't mis-wired and I also am interested in the functional aspect of the situation.

Thanks, and thanks to Jack Orman for a great simple easy splitter-buffer!

It's an active circuit, what comes out of a collector or emitter is a replica of the input AC, made from DC power.

Convention creates following, following creates convention.
