Germanium transistors from Smallbear / resistor values

I have bought many transistors from Steve at Smallbear and they always came w resistor values to make it work as I assume because they do not fall within the 70-110 etc.. values typically used and looked for when making a Fuzz Face? So, even though the transistors fall far from those searched for values sometimes they can still sound great by adjusting the resistor values- My next statement/ question is- How/where does Steve get these values from? How does he know these values with the transistors will sound good? Breadboard? Does he keep adjusting a breadboard resistor values until it sounds good and then write them down?

Part of the reason I'm asking is cause I'm curious and the other reason is that I have some of these but no longer have the resistor documentation that went along with them. Sure, I can test the HFE using GEO methods, but there has to be more to it.

Thanks

James
