Parts question for EA Tremolo

I built one of these about 2 years ago, based on the GGG build (and board) and have a question for anyone who's successfully built this pedal. I am about to build another one, and am putting together a parts order from Mouser. Can anyone tell me the part number that you used for the caps C5, C6 and C7 (1ųF)? The ones that I used in my original build are HUGE, and as a result have started causing some noise to be introduced in the circuit. While we're at it, the C2 and C4 caps (0.47ųF) are quite large, which makes me think I could be using something smaller as well. I notice that other versions of this circuit call for electrolytics in place of C5 C6 and C7, but this particular build just calls for "film" in those positions. A mouser part number would be awesome, but a little enlightment to the right choice would just plain rock.

This will be my 15th (or so) build (my first being the NPN) and I have indeed read the FAQ on capacitors, but these high value film caps always tend to throw me for a loop.

Thanks in advance.

try electrolytic for the 1u values, maybe tantalum for the .4u.  Or search for Wima brand caps and see if they have the values you need, they are nice and compact.

I recently built this circuit and I used tantalums for the 1uf caps, worked great, fit fine.  I should have used tants for the .47uf parts to... all I had on hand were .22uf film.  I used them and they severely effected the final output.

Here's a part number for a wima .47uf that will work.  Hard to judge the actually physical size though:  505-MKS20.47/63/5

I guess my concern w/ the tantalum or electrolytic had to do with what direction they'd be oriented. I don't recall seeing in the schematic any mention of the polarity.  If I'm missing something please let me know. I assume that I'd orient the - w/ the ground side, but apart from that... ?

try multilayer ceramic caps...
they come in values up to 2.2uF (maybe even more)
and they are tiny in size.

they aren't the highest grade audio caps, or the most expensive, but they are easy to work with in tiny spaces.
and i can't believe they would sounds less good then elco's...
but i might be wrong.

i like multilayer ceramics and they are handy!

That's a good question on the polarity, I don't recall how I determined what direction to orient the tantalums... I know I wrote it down on the printed schematic, but it's at home.  :(

Check over at ROG for their schematic of the EA tremolo.  Its slightly different from the GGG version but I believe is shows electrolytics in the 1uf section IIRC.

By the way, how do you like the EA trem?  I've been thinking about building a tremolo for a while now, just trying to decide which one would be easiest and cheapest.

for easy and cheap, the EA is the one IMO.  If you want all possible bases covered, build the Tremulus Lune and be done with it ;)
