DIY version of the Bad Monkey?

I've been using a Fuzz Face into my Bad Monkey for a year or so with great results.  I also run the Monkey as boost for my Bassman 10 without the Face in front of it.  Sounds pretty much the way I like it!

I understand the Monkey is cheap and is much like a Tubescreamer, but I have mine set for an almost clean boost with the bottom dialed high (3:00) and the high tone at 1:00.
The 'screamer is too midrangy in the ones I have tried.

Is there a semi-clean boost in the DIY format that I could use for the same effect?
The more homebrew the better, as they say.
Might be useless since the Monkey is only $40 and all.
Humor me.

well, the bad monkey is basically a tubescreamer-ish type circuit with an active bass eq circuit (basic gyrator, see geofex for info on gyrators).
You could always just do a basic non-inverting opamp stage into the low pass into a baxandall circuit and get something similiar. you might need to add a gain stage on the tail end though.
