you have to find the specs for each device, and compare. Look for similar 'dark resistance, light resistance'.  You can Google the parts sheets.

I made one using the large yellow LED and an LDR with a max 200k resistance from Radio Shack and shrink tubing.  Listen to my sound clips on Basic Audios sound samples website.

You can pretty use anything for this.

In my opinion the best results come from using an LDR with a fast response time. The best sounding part for me has been the VTL5C9. But these cost about $7! Which makes this part the most expensive part of the project.

The VTL5C9 is an LED/LDR package. There must be cheaper alternative, but I have yet to find it.

I ordered 5 of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270591343718&ssPageName=ADME:L:COSI:US:1123

They charged me $3 shipping so that'd be < $3 each ppd.  A good deal if they work well (I read somewhere that they did).
...and you will have them quickly.

Ironically, I haven't tried em yet because I have been waiting nearly a month and a half for my Futurlec order that has one more part I needed to build it.

good luck
