Octave down + Octave up?

Im just looking at my pedal-array-to-be... and im just wondering... anyone tried using a blue box and green ringer at the same time, or something in that vein?  sound samples?  I can imagine it sounding very very sick, which is a good thing :D

what order would you suggest placing them in?  i ask because im gonna be mounting 3 effects per enclosure (ammo cans)... i will have separate jacks, but i'd like to get my left-to-right order decent enough so that i don't have a mess of criss-crossed patch cords... at least not all of the time...

1) Copy your first note to the regular forum.  It's much too *on*-topic for here.

2) Always best to run the two octave-category circuits in parallel not series.  Too many problems in terms of what they're making octaves OF.

3) See Japanese Super Octaver project at my site (http://hammer.ampage.org).  You'll probably need to scroll down 3 or 4 pages.  Some folks have built it and had good things to say.  There may even be some threads dedicated to it in the archives.

Here's a clip of my Blue Box (store-bought) driving my DIY Green Ringer.  The first bit has the Ringer bypassed with the Blue Box Blend knob set at 9:00, then the Ringer is switched in: http://home-wrecker.com/bb-gr.mp3

This other clip has the Blue Box in parallel with my DIY Scrambler, via the runoffgroove.com Splitter-Blend.  It's recorded with my Casio rather than guitar, but shows how the two signals could be mixed as Mark suggests: http://runoffgroove.com/sb2c.mp3

LOL!  that is SO awesome.  sounds like both pedals track a lot better than the whammy or pitch shifter effects on my digitech
RP300.  im so sick of that thing.  once i build up my arsenal, it's going into a sonic annihilation style fx loop, never to be
seen again.  its just too... too... digital  ...  anyways, sounds very 16-bit nintendo-like. that sample reminds of a game i had called "river
city ransom".   i actually had the idea of "covering" the double dragon theme before.  that sound is perfect for it, if not
just for the intro.  ahh, nostalgia.

so, blue-green it is!  i'll be sure to place the switches close enough to turn both on at once... i can definitely see myself
using that.  funny you should mention the scrambler, too- thats the third effect im gonna be mounting in that can!
i believe i shall label them "Fatman" "Littleboy" and "Fallout", respectively

thanks for the reply, Mark. the super octaver sounds like a neat pedal... but "decidedly a step up or two in complexity"
might not be the best thing for me... not just yet, anyway

p.s. sorry for the on-topic post in the ot lounge... i just thought since it was dealing more with the SOUND as opposed to specifically the contruction of effects it didnt quite belong in the other section... woops :\

No problem.  Sometimes you start with the idea for a sound and proceed to the technical solution to achieving it.  Doesn't always have to start with a nonfunctioning fuzzbox.

Well, I didn't mention that I was following a standard protocol for getting the best tracking from the Blue Box (or almost any other analog octave up/down box):

- use neck pickup
- Tone control at minimum
- play above 9th fret
- no chords!

Also, reversing the order can also yield some interesting sounds.

Here's the Green Ringer alone, then into the Blue Box (Blend at 9:00): http://home-wrecker.com/gr-bb.mp3

Here's a side-by-side comparison of "Blue Box into Green Ringer" vs. "Green Ringer into Blue Box" clip (same Blend setting): http://home-wrecker.com/bb-gr-bb.mp3

Finally, an attempt to channel my inner Garth Hudson (Green Ringer into Blue Box, Blend at 12:00; with software reverb and flanging): http://home-wrecker.com/gr-bb2.mp3

There are a lot of sounds available by combining those two circuits.

geez, now i can't decide, they're both great sounds.  oh well... a few criss-crossed patches now and then never hurt anyone.
i can't wait to try an ebow with those configs, it'll be like a strange synthetic strings quartet ... or wait... ummmm...  one sec...

2 down -> 1 down + dry + dry -> 1 up...  okay, trio :D

Hmmmm...... how about putting the GR & BB in parallel and then using a panner with its LFO modulated by an envelope follower.  :P

isn't there a green ringer circuit in the mutron octave divider circuit? also i believe that some EE named george merriman patented some tracking circuit for both the octave up(green ringer - dan armstrong) and octave down in the octave divider. maybe you can extract the tracking circuit? just a thought, peace waldo

I sing the praises of the Pearl OC7 - Octave up, clean blend, one and two octaves down, all at the same time - great tracking, easy enough build, hands-down the best octave(s) down I've heard.  Octave up isn't the best, but it'll do.

http://gaussmarkov.net/zeta55/layouts/oc-07/oc-07-project.pdf - uses surface mount chips

I built mine using Zeta55's layout - can't find it right now, but search around - doesn't require surface mount.
