board for eyelet / turret projects

Hello. Can someone please tell me what the board type you use for these projects is called, I have tried searching but can only find some expensive pre made ones on ebay. I would like to get my own blank board and cut / install eyelets onto it. I have seen the perf board but I don't like the look of it at all.

If a link to a UK supplier is known I 'd be very grateful.

It's either phenolic board or glass-epoxy, which in turn may be called G2, G4 or FR4.

You can make your own by buying PCB stock with copper on it and etching all the copper off, but it is sold without the copper at plastics suppliers. Easiest is to call up a plastics supplier and ask for fiberglass-epoxy sheet in 1.6mm or 3.2mm thickness.

As a cheapo DIY dodge, you can use plastic laminate countertop material. This is brand-named "Formica" here in the USA, don't know about the UK, as we are divided by a common language. In fact, almost any insulating sheet material which will withstand the heat of soldering on the eyelets  will work. The Fender-style eyelet board is a rubberized fiber product originally used to make barrels/drums for holding industrial quantities of powders. Seems like it's trade-named "For-Bon", but don't hold me to that.

Most tube amp guys are using Garolite and buy it from McMaster Carr.
It's made from FR-4 phenolic/epoxy that is commonly used for making PCBs.
It's made availible in copper-clad or unclad, and comes in various sizes, thicknesses and colors.

Watts Tube Audio also sells blank Garolite material and offer the best color selection.

If you're looking for something cheap, try Apex Jr's tagboard (11-3/4" x 2-1/4" w 28 rows of contacts for only $3.95... it uses the cheesy contacts rather than common turrets)

Vulcanized fiber. That's the generic name for the stuff Fender used to make their eyelet boards from. It's available from lots of places.

Regal Plastics is one place I've bought G-10 and FR4 unclad PCB stock. I once got about a pound of 2" wide strips each about 18" long for free. They're in the habit of selling or giving away the contents of their scrap bin.

They're made by Central Eyelets and Pressings in the Midlands, who also sell brass eyelets.

If you want plain FR4 board, try Vulcascot. You have to buy a complete sheet, though.

Banzai Effects in Germany sell epoxy-glass board. I've dealt with them for quite a few years and they're reliable and quick.
