The AC188 is a great transistor for the FF, I've tried it many times. But:

  Read at GEO, Technology of the Fuzzface.
  Then, use the Ge transistor jig that tests for leakage and gain, this is what determines suitable FF device candidates.
 

Yeah, you need to test them first. Out of a batch of fifty, I found about 25 in the good range.
