there's something wrong with my peppermill. According to the details on Runoffgroove's peppermill site,
http://www.runoffgroove.com/peppermill.html
Here's the 2 sets of pin voltages:
Q1 [BS170],D=5.6v, G=2.7v, S=0.7v
Q2 [J201], D=4.5v, G=0, S=115mv

I built the Hot Peppermill from here:
http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/main.php/v/MarkMs-Gallery/album15/album76/Peppermill_HOT_LAYOUT.gif.html
My pin voltages are way out.
On Q2 I trim the pot to give 4.5v, then G=7.9v and S=8.6v
On Q1, D=3.8v, G=6.3v and S=8.5v

Could this mean one, or both of my transistors are blown? I can't find any circuit errors or dry solder joints :(

What a coincidence. I just perfboarded the Peppermill tonight.  It worked the first time right from the breadboard to perf.   I used the perf layout from the R.O.G. website.  It is a fairly simple circuit so I would think if you used an audio probe I'm sure you'll fix it with no problem.
Good luck.

Did you double check transistor pinouts to the datasheets for the brand of BS170 you're using?  The brand Zetex is the opposite from the Fairchild trannies.  Just a thought.

Ah, good question, no I'll try find the brand and double check.

Al Heeley

Its a Fairchild DGS, as per the schematic, so thats not the problem
