Just looking for confirmation:

My favorite parts supplier sent me HEF4049BP 's as being unbuffered.

I cannot find any indication that they are unbuffered.
Has anyone else tried to use these?

The datasheet shows they're the buffered kind.  The giveaway is the diagram of "one gate" which shows three inverters in series.

But you CAN use them, they just have much higher gain and may not clip as "gracefully" as the unbuffered kind.

A few hours ago I sent a mail to the support service of the parts supplier asking if there had been a mistake.
I just received a mail that the right 4049U's are on the way.
Great service!

Supplier is Banzai BTW.

Just tried the Red Llama with the HEF4049BP on my AX84 P1 amp.
It seems to add a kind of gating: heavy attack on the strings generates distortion for a second or two and then it suddenly cleans up.
The Red Llama is not usable now but it shows nice potential for when the CD4049U's arrive.

xxx4049Bxxx = buffered = not usable for the typical CMOS distortions
xxx4049Uxxx = unbuffered = usable

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

funnily (?) enough, the manufacturer NXP calls his buffered 4049 versions: "hex inverting buffers"
while the unbuffered 4069 species are named: "hex inverters"
