RM Octavia gain loss?

I'm a big fan of octave effects so I thought I would build a RM Octavia. I didn't know what to expect, but it has less than unity gain. Is it supposed to be a quiet pedal? It sounds almost exactly like a Green Ringer to me. I expect that it's usually used in conjunction with a fuzz or some other.

Also, is this (Octavia) the pedal Hendrix used on Machine Gun?

Dunlop feels that their Octavio pedal most exactly matches the late Hendrix sound. It has been suggested to be the most accurately reproduced of Roger Mayers pedals from the time of Hendrix, but Roger Mayer tends to disagree: http://www.roger-mayer.co.uk/octavio.pdf  Still others feel that the Tycobrahe Octavia is the most like Hendrix's Octavia sound. Research all availiable copys and the ones roger builds.

Thanks for the link pedallove.
Has anyone else who built this pedal noticed a gain loss?

The Octavia i built does not use a transformer, so according to the article it's the more evolved version (albeit "flawed"). So is the volume loss part of it? I don't know where to find the proper transformer here in Toronto to build a different version.

The most brilliant example of Jimi using an Octavia (IMHO) on the Band Of Gypsys album was the song "Who Knows", in the middle when Jimi drops out so Buddy Miles can do his scat vocal thing, then when Jimi comes back in you will definately notice his guitar sounds noticably different that it did in the beginning of the song, then he uses the Octavia all the way through to the end.

If you want the transformer, go to Honson on College Street, just west of Spadina (inside what appears to be a Home Hardware).  They carry several Mouser transformers.  I got the one for my Octavia there for somethng like a buck or a $1.50.

Two months later I discovered a tiny solder bridge. Now this thing is loud as hell.

Sometimes you just need to step away for a while.

hey rouse do you build the RM too?...im just in love with that thing ;D
Do you know where I can find some theory about how this thing works?...this is the first transistor effect i do

p.d:
... how about the foxx tone machine?...i saw a vid on youtube and it seems to have "more octave"
...mojo is in your hands....

It's a cool effect. I'm selling my Proctavia because I prefer the RM Octavia.

Here's a link to a thread talking about the theory behind Octave up http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=76327.0

The Foxx Tone Machine seems to be the ultimate octave fuzz. i have a Prescription Electronics Experience (clone of Tone Machine) and it's awesome. High Gain fuzz with a really pronounced octave effect.

I also just built an Ampeg Scrambler inside a Wah shell set to control the Texture knob. Listen to Tcobretti sound samples of that. http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=48637.0
