How do I wire a pot for a gain control?

Can I wire it the same way I wire the volume knob, or should I wire it as a variable resistor?

  Yupp, both ways work sometimes.
Trick is to know what time it is.
To know that I'd need a schematic or description.
Like...between gain stages [see BMP] is one thing.
In the FBLoop of an opamp [tubescreamer] is of course another.
Also see the Dist+ gain knob, which...is different too.
I'm sure there are other alternate or derivitave ways, these are the three common types.

I just want a gain knob in a bazz fuss. It shouldn't be too complicated, but this is my first time building a pedal.

You can put another volume control in series with your guitar volume.
Use the guitar volume to try out how the 'gain control' works.
Because it's a hard clipping amplifier stage, reducing the input w/guitar volume control should clean up and reduce the distortion and output level.
I'm not sure how far you'd want to change the bias, and this would no longer be a Bazz Fuzz, but you could introduce an emitter/ground resistance to reduce gain.
