transistors and collector resistor questions

Hi-

new to this building my own pedal and have had success with LPB-1, the beginner project here, unpowered tone controls and the latest - the venerable Bazz Fuss.  The last pedal leads to my questions.

In the Bazz Fuss article mention is made to using various transistors but make sure to use the correct collector resistor.

For different transistors is there "standard" collector resistor values?  From the Bazz Fuss schematics it appears that a 2N3904 and 2N5088 use a 100 K. The MPSA13 uses a 10 K.

What if I wanted to use a 2N2222, a 2N4401, a 2N5809. a C1815 or an MPSA18?  What collector values should I use?  How do I figure this info out?

I just don't want to mix-n-match and toss together combinations and burn stuff out.  I would really like to start with the knowledge of DIYer's who have done this or definitely have more knowledge than me.
