Huh, interesting.  The "real vacuum tube sound" claim has been made before, I guess we'll have to wait and see (hear).

Vacuum fluorescent tubes, if I am not mistaken, run with temperature-limited cathodes rather than space-charge limited cathodes, so you would get the effect of a tube run at low filament voltage.  You may get effects like this where distortion of various orders is plotted against filament voltage:



because of transfer functions like this:



where the natural tendency for excessive current increase at low grid bias levels is countered by the lack of electrons available.  Note in both cases that the distortion is lower with a starved filament.  It follows this table:
