Hello, I'm starting couple of projects using this cmos inverter for a distortion. And I was maybe thinking of experimenting with SMD boards for saving space, has any of you compared between the two packages? (soundwise, reliability, etc) I read in one of RG's posts that SMD semiconductors should be as reliable as Thru Hole ones... but I'm also concerned about how well they'll sound.

it's the same exact thing. The IC itself is small enough to fit in both the SMD and the DIP package...the DIP package just gets gigantified legs and some extra plastic.

The advantage of SMD from a manufacturing standpoint is that the circuit board does not require as many holes.  Drilling through fibreglass consumes drill bits and board manufacturers price their product by size of board but to a greater extent by number and size of holes.  So if you eliminate 16 holes for a DIP (dual inline package) 4049UBE, you get a cheaper board.  If you are producing thousands, this can be substantial.

There are two problems with SMD:

1. They are more difficult to repair unless you have an SMD workstation that has the correct soldering and desoldering tools.  All dimensions are smaller (typically, 0.050" pad spacing as opposed to 0.100" for through holes) and hand soldering tools are likely to cause shorts due to solder bridging.

2. Flexing the board may cause solder connections to go intermittent.  Think about how some boards are mounted: they are supported on one end by some pots and on the other by standoffs to the case.  If the dimensions are not correct, it is possible to get stress on the board that may lead to failures.

Yes, I'm planning to produce thousands (some day at least :D) I now gonna experiment with a PCB and check the results.
