Few Quick Questions about the A/DA Flanger

Hey all, i'm thinking about building the A/DA flanger clone up using Cathexis Veroboard layout as there doesn't appear to be any new PCBs being produced (thinking being I already have the vero board, enclosure and the all important MN3007)

My Main questions is, for all the CD40XX chips, do they have to be buffered or unbuffered or does it not matter, (for that matter what's the difference between UBE and UBP) I especially need to know about the CD4007 as my normal supplier doesn't stock it and they cost a fair bit on evilbay (that's over £3... but I was hoping to pay about 30p) unless somone in the U.K can sell me on cheaper perhaps?

And would there be any issue with replacing the MC1458 with either a TL072 or OPA2132... I know most people ask about replacing the 324 with TL074 and being okay so I assume it's okay.

Also I'm probably going to use an MAX1044 for a charge pump as I don't have a 18V supply, but I notice there's talk of it affecting some pedals with noise, anyone know if this may be a problem? and is there a vero layout around for the charge pump... it wont be hard to make, but I just fear messing it up and destroying the biggest, most expensive pedal I will probably ever make.

Also am I right in saying I should change R65 from 82k to 150k, the Threshold pot from 10k to 100k, adding a 22k Resistor in series with C37 and use a 2N5459 instead of the J201.

Finally will it require input grounding as I was hoping to use the millenium Bypass.

Lets see.

I used the CD4049UBE and haven't tried others but I would imagine that the buffer makes a change in the circuit.

I have made many with the LM324/MC1458 combo but recently used TL074 and TL072 and liked the improvement. Lower noise has an advantage and the sweep remained the same.

I use a charge pump with my most recent build with no problems. You shouldn't have anything to worry.

I have only built them with true bypass so I can only recommend that. Electronic switching has given me trouble with pedals that have LFOs so I TB everything but a few pedals nowadays.

So I need to find unbuffered ones... darn, anyone that read this in the U.K possibly wanna sell me a set?

If the sound quality improves then i'l swap out the LM324s aswell for TL074, I assume the BurrBrown is better than the TL072, but i've got both.

Ah good, yeah I read the neovibe didn't like the charge pump but i'l build mine up with one then.

Well the millenium bypass is still true bypass, just not input grounded , did you mean you built them up with input grounding or do you just mean the electronic switching aspect of it, trying to do everything on the cheap so DPDT is £1.50 cheaper for me than a 3PDT and I read that it can be very subtle sometimes so an LED is a good idea, guess I can just remove it if it doesn't work though.

Thanks for the reply though!

I assume the burr brown would be even clearer with better headroom but I haven't tried them. The quad opamps are pretty expensive.

On the subject of expensive, it is kind of funny to spend all that money on exotic opamps and then scoff at an extra couple pounds for a 3pdt. I think it was a cd4066 bypass that I had issues with. I haven't used millenium in a long time.

Scruffie

Ah.... they might have been free samples... I do try and use as cheaper parts as possible normally, but I have them sitting around so they need to go in something.

Oh I just use the millenium, well i'l try it and see what happens.

Buffered ones will work fine.

Scruffie

Oh so I can use buffered or unbuffered, sweet, many thanks  ;)

if you're afraid of noise with the max1044 I suggest you to use a lt1054.. just do a quick search on the forum to discover all the advantages of this chip ;)
