Hi. I´m wondering why my original rat is so damn noisy when engaged. It´s not bothering me while playing, but it´s humming like crazy when you stop playing.
Especially it bothers me, because a friend of mine built the rat from tonepad, with the exact same delicious distortion tone.....and it is soooo quiet....Why. ( Mine is modded with that old chip, I don´t remember the name, but its the same chip, taht tonepad calls for)
Why is it so noisy? Something general, or do I just have a bad one?

Oh, I dunno, maybe something related to having a gain of several thousand:icon_eek:  Small differences in noise due to shielding, layout, signal source, when amplified by several thousand times, can be juuuuuuuuust a tad more noticeable.

  Compensated opamp IIRC, LM308.
Something is different bewteen what you describe, but was a Rat for Rat swap/noise comparison or were there any other factors in the signal chain which were altered?
A Rat for Rat only comparison would narrow it down to small odds that something outside the two Rats was different, that the noise is 'in this Rat.
Which means there's something different about the two Rats, noise is a byproduct of that difference. I never had luck with reducing noise by swapping chips, it seemed to be a process of how I wired 'it', or a strick byproduct of what Mark referred to, noise x gain = more noise.
  You referred to some mod.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Hi. It was a rat2rat (swap) comparison. No other effects in chain. Must be differences in the layout then.
I know it has massive amounts of gain, and that it makes noise quite noticable ;) It just surprises me, that the "factory" layout, shielding etc. was that bad compared to the diy...
Nevermind. I´ll just pull out the board, and build one myself :icon_biggrin:
